James Hetfield is Straight Edge?

So James Hetfield of Metallica got a Straight Edge X tattoo. He claims not be Straight Edge, but Reborn Straight Edge. He mentions that a true, hardcore straight edge hasn't ever done drugs or drank alcohol. I respect James for being poison free and all but I have to say that I think he doesn't understand Straight Edge. Claiming Edge doesn't require you to have never consumed alcohol or done drugs, claiming edge is about committing the rest of your life to being Straight Edge, there's no reborn. You either ARE or AREN'T, it's that simple. Maybe his words are taken out of context or I misunderstood what he was saying, but I think he doesn't quite get it. You can read the full interview over at Double Cross.

It's nice to know that more and more people are pledging, but I have to say, there are "hardcore" StraightEdge-ers who misunderstand the concept even more than James does. In all honestly, I have never smoked, consumed alcohol, or done drugs...EVER. I'm 23. So I guess that makes me an unofficial member of the society. And it probably makes me MORE "hardcore" than 95% of the members of this following. But I don't find myself insulting other people or bashing the crap outta' some teenage drunkard. I went to a Facebook page yesterday meant for StraightEdge and it's disgusting. It consists of people who are supposedly "hardcore" sXe and all they do is swear and curse and say things like "I hope you o.d on that s**t m*****f****r!".

Seriously?! I have a LOT of respect for the following and those who are in it for REAL. People like CM Punk (don't tell me about his villainous role in wrestling, I'm an avid fan and even I know it's scripted!). People who wholeheartedly UNDERSTAND the basics and principles associated with sXe...not a bunch of half-baked losers who "pledged" just to look cool or stand out or think they have the right to be better than anyone else. sXe doesn't mean you're better than people who drink or smoke...it only makes you different and gives you a whole new perspective on life. It lets you live free of addiction and poison. It lets you think and be creative instead of spending your time, energy, money, and health on vices that will only destroy you in the end. There's no point in claiming Edge and then going out and whacking someone's head with a baseball bat because you spotted a Budweiser in his hand.

What I'm saying is, I hope these idiots leave the bandwagon, quit the society, and stop claiming Edge because they're ruining the culture, they're giving it a horrible name, and they make people who genuinely wanna' pledge look like a bunch of sad emo freaks who have nothing better to do. If you don't fully understand what sXe is, then for Christ's sake pick up a damn book or Google it. Don't just jump aboard because your best mate did it and pretend like you know everything there is to know...it's degrading. Someone should start filtering and if necessary, start handing out beatings to these people instead. sXe is a lifestyle...not a cult...people should get that into their heads.

*end of frustrated rant*

I wanted to be straight edge as soon as I heard of it, trouble is life gets in the way! I have taken speed, ecstasy and cocaine all occasionally. I also used to binge drink. I lived with a horribly addicted man and the children we had really suffered. He had mates round constantly, I saw them consume nothing but addictive rubbish. I almost went straight edge by accident because I had to get out of that situation and the only way to be strong enough was to be straight! I visited to old ideas of straight edge and loved them. My children have watched people consume rubbish (including junk food) now they watch their mum have a healthy diet and drug free. I go to festivals straight. My daughter said she respects the way I can have as good time as my drunk friends sober! I gave up meat and sugar too. I look at my old mates still getting off their heads and feel sad but there is nothing I can do. I like the fact I can have a sober identity without seeming like a crazed goody goody Christian. I think questioning society is easier when sober because you are as clever and angry as you should be! The edgers who pledge make me cringe as it is a personal choice. I may have a tattoo because being sober means so much to me but I have deeper reasons for being sober than to look cool!
