SxE Means I Keep My Own Morals, My Own Perogative, And Stay True To Myself!

Straight edge means keeping your head up. Holding on to your morals and never letting go.

This is a life style that we can use to unite and overcome society's norm where everyone uses poisonous substances to have fun.

To me, straight edge is a philosophy, and a commitment to a drug free lifestyle.

i don't mean to insult anyone with this post--- but in reviewing blogs and discussing sxe with ex-exers, it almost seems as if they may have captured the true essence of what makaye himself was aiming to communicate- think for yourself. he wrote his songs as personal opinions to what he felt, and wasn't trying to start a movement, rather, he was trying to relay a message of individualism. even the "don't drink, don't smoke, don't fuck" lyrics aren't really what he means- as in, complete abstinence. in an interview, he even states that he's not anti-sex- he's anti-guys using sex and a method of proving themselves.

what do you all think?

Anonymous: Ian Mackaye may never have set out to start a movement, but that's what happened. Jesus never set out to start Christianity, he simply set out to speak his views on Judaism, and now a religion exists following his teachings. Now I certainly don't want to compare Ian and Jesus on the same level, it's simply an analogy. While keeping to this analogy people can choose to believe what they want of Straight Edge as people have with Christianity. There are Catholics and Protestants with often very different views on Christianity. And there are Straight Edgers with varying views on whether prescription drugs are acceptable, if any sex (pre-marital or not) is acceptable, on whether caffeine is a drug. Everyone that is Straight Edge can follow these views in any way they choose.

Now for your discussions with ex-exers I will point out that they are not Straight Edge for certain reasons and will have a bias against SxE. Same is true for people that have converted from Catholicism for example. And of course I'm biased as pro Straight Edge so you need to weigh each side appropriately.

Lastly anyone that thinks that Straight Edge shouldn't have followers or that Straight Edge shouldn't exist needs to take a long look at themselves and make sure they hold no beliefs even the belief in anarchy and the belief in atheism is a belief and thus shouldn't be held if you have these opinions on Straight Edge.
